Praia de São Rafael is a small beach in the Algarve. It has fine gold sand, crystal clear water, and is backed by golden limestone cliffs. On the beach itself there are many limestone rock formations which have been eroded over a long period of time to form interesting shapes many of which have names such as Ninho das Andorinhas or the Swallow’s Nest and Ponte Pequena or the Small Bridge.
On an almost perfect sunny day overlooking the beach from a nearby promontory, this small boy is almost alone with just his footprints. The harsh overhead sun creates pin sharp shadows against the neutral sand. This shot captures a sense of the boy’s purpose whilst freezing in time the near-random footprints of the boy’s previous paths.
