Dhobi Ghat is a well known open air laundry in Mumbai, India. The washers, locally known as Dhobis, work in the open to wash the clothes from Mumbai's hotels and hospitals. There are rows of concrete wash pens, each fitted with its own flogging stone. The Dhobi is 140 years old and it is estimated that each day half a million pieces of laundry are sent there.
By mid morning each day most of the laundry is washed and hung out to dry in neat colourful lines. This leaves the wash pens free for the Dhobi families to use for other purposes.
